I’ve just updated my display this morning at the Mackay Tourism Office on Nebo Road, Mackay.
Handpainted hats, books, purses as well as photo rings, pendants, earrings and studs. All these are also available at Out of the Box Shop in River St.
Went to my first life drawing class at Paxtons Creative Space, last night. The model started with several 2 minute and 5 minute poses. Then 10 mins and finally a 20 min and 30 min poses. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening! Can’t wait for the next class!! I’ve added another drawing to my Drawing Page.
Felt scarf by Helen Rose Design
Just completed a 3 day felt workshop! Sachiko Kotaka from Lismore NSW, demonstrated her felting techniques at Paxtons Creative Space in Mackay. I had some successes and failures, but all good! A great learning experience! It was also very physical with lots of rolling, squishing and rubbing of the felt pieces during the felt making process. We learnt techniques like nuno, calamari, wild turkey’s nest and orikiri felting. I like the idea of combining felt with sheer fabrics in decorative and creative ways, especially for a tropical climate.
The Cross Within
‘The Cross Within’ and ‘Fisher of Men’ are two new framed pieces that I have created using textiles. They symbolise my journey of faith.
If you are familiar with Australian artist, Leonard French then you will see that these pieces are inspired by his iconic works. I am hoping to visit the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne in the near future, to see first hand, his amazing stained glass ceiling and other major works.
Artists’ Potpourri commences on 24 April, 2013.
I’ll be exhibiting with other local artists, Brigette Zimmermann, Sue Mitchell and Marilyn Bliss in the Old Town Hall in Mackay.
Gifts for Mothers’ Day or any occasion. Paintings, prints, hats, bags, handmade books, jewellery. Open 10am to 4pm, 24 – 28 April and 1 – 5 May.
You are invited to meet the artists on Saturday 27 April, 2 – 4 pm.
Hope to see you there!
This is the name of the Art and Design Market, held near Arts Space, Mackay on Sunday 14 April.
A large crowd enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather while visiting the market. A guitarist played, acrobats performed with stilts and hula hoops, while a coffee van provided refreshments. A very relaxing afternoon!
‘Out of the Box Shop‘ and many other local artisans displayed their inspiring creations. Hope there are more markets like this one.
My display at the New Paxtons Night Markets. The next Market is on Friday 10 May.

And Here for the ‘Out of the Box Shop’
Cape Hillsborough - View from the lookout
A new collection of tile pendants can now be viewed in the Photographic Jewellery page. Cape Hillsborough, a seaside location north of Mackay, is the inspiration for most of the tiles in this group. Cape Hillsborough is a magical place, a little ‘off the beaten track’ where kangaroos and wallabies graze on grasses near the small nature resort or gather on the beach at dawn or dusk. The resort is surrounded by National Park which features Melaleuca woodlands, mangroves, open eucalypt forests and vine thickets. The walks within these forests have an interesting mix of plant and animal life as well as Aboriginal middens which are of cultural significance to the Juipera people. Many of the photographs in this collection were taken along the walking tracks within this National Park.
Shopping for that unique Christmas gift? Then come to ‘Six of One…and Half Dozen of Another’ Christmas market. Hand made items, lovingly created by local artists. A variety of stalls, live music, light refreshments available. After the success of a similar market in November 2011, this group of artists is keen to join forces once again in Mackay’s City Heart.
You will find the market in the Old Town Hall, Sydney Street, Mackay on Sunday 2 December.
Very excited!!! Out of the Box Shop opens tomorrow at 10 am. With almost 30 local artists participating in this concept, visitors to the gallery can experience various forms of art in one location. Located in the Upstairs Gallery in River Street, Mackay, the shop provides an opportunity for local artists to display and sell their work. The director of the gallery, Margaret Burgess, said that “Art is such an important part of a community. It is often difficult, in regional areas like Mackay, for creative people who want to share their work to find a viable and affordable opportunity”. The Paxton’s Creative Space and Upstairs Gallery provides that opportunity. This is just such an excellent concept for artists and our community as a whole.
